CHURCH HISTORY

  • · 1886: Some members of the Peterson Chapel Baptist Church in Merry Hill, NC decided to move out on their own and start another church on the other side of Highway 17 to become Oxley Hill Missionary Baptist Church
  • · October 20, 1886: Trustees purchased land from M.H. Bowen and wife on Herring Run Road.
  • · 1886: Reverend Thomas Holley became the first pastor of Oxley Hill Baptist Church.
  • · 1927: Land was given to Oxley Hill Missionary Baptist Church by Mr. John C. Bell and wife Cecilia.
  • · 1959: Reverend James Wiggins became pastor of Oxley Hill Missionary Baptist Church.
  • · 1978: More land was purchased to build a new church from the Bell family by trustees George Drake and John Cofield.
  • · 1987: The cornerstone of the new church was laid.
  • · 1991-1996: Remodeled the pulpit, choir stand, and other parts of the sanctuary. Put on a new roof and installed a new audio system.
  • · 1999: Vonner G. Horton was called into the ministry.
  • · 2000: Minister Vonner G. Horton served as acting pastor and in that same year was ordained as Reverend Vonner Horton.
  • · 2001: Minister Vonner Horton installed as pastor of Oxley Hill Missionary Baptist Church.
  • · 2001: Old parking lot paid off, new audio system installed, and new outside lighted sign installed. New fellowship hall added to the rear of the church. New pastor’s study, secretary room, board room, classrooms, media and audio rooms added. Fourth Sunday services started.
  • · 2002: Security system installed renovations to vestibule area. Oxley Hill incorporated as Oxley Hill Community Development Corporation. Land was given to Oxley Hill from Mr. & Mrs. Holley Mac Bell.
  • · 2003: Oxley Hill was used for shelter and feeding during and after the aftermath of hurricane Isabel.
  • · 2004: Renovations done to the sanctuary. Note burning for the parking lot. New steeple installed. New storage building purchased and erected behind the church edifice.
  • · 2010: Reverend Horton ordained as an Apostle.
  • · 2011: New audio and media equipment installed in sanctuary including projectors along with screens for viewing services. Oxley Hill Missionary Baptist Church becomes New Oxley Hill Baptist Church.
  • · 2012: Pulpit extended and new pulpit podium placed in pulpit.

    By taking a look at our crest, you can understand what we believe in addition to the tenets of our Baptist faith.

    Bible - The Bible represents our faith and our foundation. All that we believe, teach and preach is found in the contents of God’s Word.

    Cross - The Cross is the message that we carry and the task that we carry.

    Flames - The flames represent the fires of the Holy Ghost the enable to advance the kingdom and effectively do ministry.

    Praying Hands - The familiar praying hands are symbolic of role of prayer in our personal lives and church.

    Crown - The crown carries a two-fold meaning. A constant request to be crown with the wisdom of God and the understanding of the blessings we have here on earth and in Heaven.
